Abortion is also bad for women - Pro Life Campaign - Irish Examiner

"FINDING (of Medical Royal Colleges) FATALLY UNDERMINED MEDICAL RATIONALE FOR MOST USED GROUNDS OF BRITAIN'S ABORTION LEGISLATION"

.

"Last week also saw the publication of a review by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges on induced abortion and mental health...One of the most notable things to emerge from the review was its finding that abortion provides no mental health benefit to women. THE FINDING FATALLY UNDERMINED THE MEDICAL RATIONALE FOR THE MOST USED GROUNDS OF BRITAIN'S ABORTION LEGISLATION. Ninety five percent of abortions performed in the UK are performed on the grounds that continuance of the pregnancy would involve risk of injury to the mental health of the pregnant woman....UNFORTUNATELY SOME OF THE COVERAGE OF THE REPORT CREATED CONFUSION AS TO ITS ACTUAL FINDINGS..." Missing the big picture on abuse - RTE Drivetime

Feeding prejudice-omitting facts

In an item on Friday's Drivetime, dealing with a
report on sexual abuse in the Dutch Catholic Church, RTE's Mary Wilson, RTE'S Philip Boucher-Hayes and a Dutch investigative reporter omitted an important fact: the Dutch Report, itself, pointed out that child sexual abuse was no more prevalent in the Catholic Church than it was in non-Catholic institutions ("It emerged that the risk was twice as high as the national average, but with no significant difference between Roman Catholic and
non-Roman Catholic institutions." - Page 9). The Programme also failed to read out a text which drew the attention of the Drivetime team to this statement in the Report, which begs the question, does the repeated omission of relevant facts and contextual information amount to deliberate public deception regarding the issue of child sexual abuse? - Drivetime [1 hr 17 mins into audio] - RTE Radio One - Fri 16th Dec, 2011

[Comment: The Programme also included the playing, without critical comment, of a particularly anti-Catholic section in the infamous Enda Kenny 'Cloyne' speech as well as a feature on Christopher Hitchens, who died on Thursday] ]

DOUBLE STANDARD!

RTE and its treatment of the Church under the microscope

A FRIGHTENING DOUBLE STANDARD in RTE's attitudes to child abuse and the Catholic Church has emerged in the last 24 hours.

Following the settlement, at the High Court, yesterday afternoon, of the Fr Kevin Reynolds defamation case, Kevin Dawson, Head of Corporate Communications at RTE, decided to go on the Station's
Drivetime programme to be interviewed by Mary Wilson, at 5:40pm.

When asked, would heads now roll, over the Fr Reynolds case, Mr Dawson said, "It's very difficult for a rolled head, so to speak, to learn anything".

This response is in stark contrast to the attitude adopted by RTE towards the priests and bishops which the Station helped to hound out of office.

The irony of RTE's position, however, appears to have been lost, not only on Mr Dawson, but also on the Drivetime Presenter, who decided not to follow up with a related question.

Later, that night, as part of the terms of the Settlement, an apology was read out on air on RTE 1, immediately prior to the screening of Prime Time (it was last May's Prime Time programme, 'Mission to Prey' which gave rise to yesterday's defamation case in the High Court).

Although the wording of the apology was comprehensive, it was read out quickly and in a monotone way, as pointed out by Fr Sean McMcDonagh of the Association of Catholic Priests and Fr Eamon Aylward of the Irish Missionary Union, on Friday's Today with Pat Kenny.

Fr McDonagh also pointed out that had it been a bishop who had been required, by a court, to read out an apology, and had the bishop got someone to read the apology in a similar monotone way to the way last night's Prime Time Apology was read, that bishop would have been subject to severe media criticism.

These incidents, in the last 24 hours alone, have revealed a worrying double standard in the way RTE holds people and organizations to account for their actions. It cannot be a matter of one rule for priests and bishops and another rule for RTE journalists and producers. More generally, it cannot be a matter of one rule for the Church and another for RTE!

The challenges now facing RTE are formidable and while it is clear the Station would wish to be able, quickly, to put the affair behind it, in reality, it will have some work to do if it is to tackle the growing impression among ordinary Catholics that when it comes to fair play for the Church, the Institution that is RTE 'still doesn't get it'!

...

The Family and Media Association is encouraging its members and other people of good will to protest this obvious double standard on the part of RTE by contacting the Station and other authorities.

Delay to priest's defamation case - Irish Times - Wed 16 Nov, 2011

"THE DEFAMATION action by Fr Kevin Reynolds against RTE did not proceed at the High Court yesterday because no judge was free to hear it." - Delay to priest's defamation case - Irish Times - Wed 16 Nov, 2011 - [Comment re headline: Why was the word, "RTE" not included? Also, the word, 'priest' -- when used by the IT -- is almost a pejorative term, certainly impersonal and not likely to arouse much sympathy in the reader/viewer. An alternative headline: "RTE defamation case - Fr Reynolds forced to wait for his day in court".]

No judge to hear defamation case- Irish Independent - Wed 16 Nov, 2011

[Comment: Tiny article which would hardly warrant a second look, particularly, in view of the absence in the headline of any words which could identify, much less personalise, the Case. None of: 'Prme Time Investigates', 'Mission to Prey', 'RTE'' and Fr Kevin Reynolds' are used. Even, the word, 'priest' is left out]

'Crime Time'? Does RTE have a 'mission to prey' on all Catholic priests? - FMA

??????

Two paternity tests have shown that the Co Galway-based priest, Fr Kevin Reynolds, who was featured in the RTE 'Prime Time Investigates' programme 'Mission to Prey', is not the father of a Kenyan woman, it was revealed in the High Court today.

Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy said it was wholly unsatisfactory that RTE had not already lodged a defence to the claim for defamation which Fr Reynolds had taken out in early July but gave the National broadcaster until the end of the month to do so.

Is this case slowly but surely revealing that RTE has an unstated mission of its own, a 'mission to prey' on all Catholic priests?

Catholic Communications Office Director in hard hitting defence of Faith, in the media - Examiner - FMA

Defending the dignity of women

The Director of the Catholic Communications Office of the Irish Bishops Conference, Martin Long has launched a stinging attack on a feature which appeared in the Sep 16th edition of the Irish Examiner newspaper.

The
'Joyless Sects' feature included a photograph of a female model in a provocative pose involving rosary beads. Mr Long described this 'objectification' as "offensive to Catholics and demeaning to women. It demonstrates a complete lack of respect for a prayer cherished by Catholics. The Rosary is, and always has been, a prayer associated especially with the family", he went on to say.

Later, in the letter, Mr Long explicitly defends the Catholic Church's teaching on human sexuality when he says, "The Church's teaching on sexuality is rooted in the innate dignity of each human person created in the image and likeness of God and redeemed by Christ".

Mr Long closes by calling the Irish Examiner to task: "I would have expected a more reasoned debate on these important issues from writers in a quality national newspaper", he says -

Did the Minister read the letter? Cloyne - FMA - Irish Times

Minister stands firm on abuse plans - Irish Times

'I hate to say this but...' DID THE MINISTER READ THE LETTER? Did Minister Frances Fitzgerald read the Holy See's response to the Tanaiste, Eamonn Gilmore, regarding the Murphy Commission's Report into child sexual abuse in Cloyne?

In this Irish Times report by Patsy McGarry, out today, the Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald is quoted as saying that the Vatican had "not been comparing like with like." "I don't think it was a valid comparison," she said. "We are in a different place now" to 1996 "with over 10 years' experience of the guidelines". (see paragraph 3)

But, surely, the comparison that the Vatican made was between a 1997 letter from Archbishop Luciano Storero (linked to Cardinal Hoyos) and the 1996 position of the then Fine Gael and Labour Coalition Government? In a disturbing echo of the Taoiseach's Cloyne error, the Minister appears, clearly, to be under the illusion that the Vatican was referring to some imaginary 'letter of intervention' from perhaps "as little as 3 years ago", to quote the Taoiseach. Can it be that the Minister for Children takes the issue of the abuse of children so lightly that she did not actually read the Vatican Response to her Government? Sadly, there is a poor appetite in the Irish media for holding the Government accountable for ITS failings with respect to child abuse!

...

The Minister is also quoted as saying she is "very struck" by indications of increased sexualised behaviour among children. Her comments are far from being premature and an acknowledgement of the problem should inform several areas of Government policy, including that of broadcasting. The Family and Media Association first raised this issue of the sexualization of children over 4 years ago, as did CARI, the organization which the Minister is quoted as referring to in the present article. "...If that Law was passed as it is, it would almost certainly be found unconstitutional...and the real problem with the law and at some point Ministers Shatter and FitzGerald are going to realise this, I think it will be an interesting political experiment to see how many weeks it takes them to realize it: people aren't going to support this measure and who's going to benefit from that? It's people who get information outside of the Confessional who should be made criminals for not passing it on but they will be able to use the confusion surrounding this issue and the fact that the public don't support this issue as a means for saying I don't have to comply with the Law at all "

Paternity test 'clears' priest who is suing RTE over rape allegation - Independent

PRIME TIME INVESTIGATES: A MISSION TO PREY

In May of this year,

PRIME TIME INVESTIGATES: A MISSION TO PREY...

"Good that more terrible abuse has been brought, in a certain sense, into the light, particularly in the 'forgotten continent'. Strange, however, that the absence of any criminal conviction and the assertion of innocence should be presented as proof of guilt. Not sure also about the producers' confidence in Africa's criminal justice systems -- was under the impression that concerns had been raised, in particular about Uganda's proposed execution of those accused of homosexual rape. A recent documentary on South African prisons also showed the horrific lawlessness that obtains there...Will be following with interest the results of that paternity test. Hope I'll be able to find them easily on the RTE website, whatever the outcome..."

Vatican response re Cloyne - This Week - RTE

Archbishop Martin, David Quinn, Richard Bruton, Fr Tom Doyle [AUDIO] (balanced programme from RTE)

"It's a very specific allegation but it is important also to be able to say calmly and ask the Taoiseach or whoever was speaking on his behalf what exactly was meant by this so that we can move forward not having suspicions that there were some other agendas there that we don't know about" - Archbishop Diarmuid Martin

"There were a number of other citations they could have found of Ratzinger before he was Pope and of other leading vatican...where they clearly state...that they are strongly opposed to Bishops reporting criminal activity by their priests to the civil authorities as if they are above the law..." - Fr Tom Doyle. "Well let's hear the quotes. Let's hear the quotes from Cardinal Ratzinger. Let's get chapter and verse and tell us what they were and where they were said and in what context!" - David Quinn (no response from Fr Doyle) ...

"Therefore, what law of the State was the Vatican interfering with? The answer is none! And so, if you're going to be making incredibly serious allegations at the level of international diplomacy you'd better be able to back it up to the hilt!" - David Quinn

Senator Mullen accuses RTE's Finucane of ratcheting up outrage

Senator Ronan Mullen accused RTE presenter Marian Finucane of "ratcheting up" outrage on today's Marian Finucane Show. In a discussion regarding the vatican reponse to the Cloyne Report, the Senator also accused the broadcaster of advancing an agenda and behaving more like an interviewee than an interviewer. Texts in support of the Senator were read out, following a break.
[AUDIO]

Sun 4 Sept 2011

CLICK here to listen to audio of the Show

(begins 27 mins into audio; main exchange: 37 mins into audio)

"But Marian, you're becoming an interviewee here not an interviewer, in fairness, you know...Marian, with respect...What you are doing Marian is you are ratcheting up the outrage here ...and ...you are preventing us from distinguising between what has to be condemended outright and in forthright terms and what ought not to have been said and my point to you is simply this, there is nothing and there was nothing in Enda kenny's speech that acknowledged that over the last 10 years Ratzinger in particular had led a reform about how these issues were handled but what you did get was a direct allegation of elitism ... and there's no evidence provided in the speech. You then get this taking out of context of a quotation which is about something totally different and it's made to sound like the Church is saying that we don't really have to follow the laws of the land and this is why it's important and this is why I think maybe unconsciously you have a bit of an agenda here (oh I most certainly do not) oh I do think you have on this point...It is a failure to look at the precise meaning of words and it is a failure to accept that sometimes innocent people get slated along with the guilty"

Why would the State draft legislation that it must know will not achieve its stated objective?

QUESTION:...??

Why would the State draft legislation that a) it knows depends on the compliance of priests; b) it knows no priest will comply with?

The proposed legislation on mandatory disclosure, insofar as it applies to the Seal of the Confessional, requires the compliance of Priests, if it is to have any effectivness.

But, even the most cursory research into the Catholic Church would have revealed that priests will not comply with the legislation and break the Seal.

Why then is the State determined to introduce legislation which it must have known, in advance, will not work, that is, will not achieve its stated goal of acquiring additional information for protecting children?

This is very puzzling. Is there some other goal which has not yet been stated? If not, then the only conclusion to be drawn is that the Minister for Justice and the Minister for Children have been breathtakingly incompetent in carrying out their homework assignment!

Why has no other country introduced such legislation? Why were there no attempts made in Northern Ireland, for example, to compel priests to disclose information acquired in Confession? In these cases, the homework was done.

The last time an Irish Government took such pride in a unilateral and inadequately researched course of action, it seems to me, was the bank guarantee!

Tommy Tiernan lashes out at media - the new moral authority!

On the John Murray Show, this morning, comedian Tommy Tiernan turned his guns on the media as the new moral authority, sections of which he compared to some of the priests of a previous era when they used their pulpits to speak out against certain individuals: "That was absolutely a Dublin based thing and a media based thing...The media in Ireland is fairly, I mean, it's ah, I think, so, you know, you have to be careful what you say, you know, because some of the papers now, the tabloids, in a sense, and some of the radio shows, I think: you listen to Marian sometimes on a Saturday, or, ah, you get the feeling that you have to kind of justify yourself to them or something, that there is. There is a great sense of morality, or, I don't like it, I tend to steer away from it, and, with the tabloids, the tabloids have, in a sense, replaced the Church: the tabloids now decide who's guilty and who's innocent and they'll give out to you from their pulpit and there's no, you can't question the tabloids because they're too powerful and they'll come after you. It is the same as 50 years ago, you know, the priest giving out about you and you dare not say anything because your name might be called out next week, you know." Unsurprisingly DJ John Murray didn't attempt to explore, further, the theme of the media with his guest [AUDIO - 17 mins into broadcast - there are interesting aspects to the rest of the interview, also]

Finola Bruton challenges Irish Universities' Women and Gender Studies departments

Finola Bruton: Women and Gender Studies departments should ask: why so many men on the dole? - Iona Institute Conference, today

Finola Bruton said, today, that the Women and Gender Studies departments of Irish universities should ask: why are so many men on the dole? and not just why are so few women in the boardroom?

In Ireland, approximately 17% of men are, now, unemployed, in the wake of the onset of the recession. This compares with approximately 10% of women.

Ms Bruton was speaking at the Iona Institute conference, Women, home and work; towards a policy that's fair to all families in the Davenport Hotel, Dublin, this afternoon.

Tonight with Vincent Browne - John Allen, Patsy McGarry... - TV3

Somewhat 'pythonesque' episode of Tonight with Vincent Browne (note Vincent's antipathy towards sheep!)

CNN Senior Vatican analyst John Allen, in particular, seems to expose a worrying and profound level of ignorance about the Catholic Church on the part of the Irish religious 'commentariat'.

(For the uninformed, the Catholic Church tends to be an institution that is defined by its crises)

Keeping Christ at the Heart of 'X'-mas

The Family and Media Association (FMA) has today released the Christmas edition of its Media Report magazine.
In the Report, FMA questions what it calls the "incomprehensible response by the Irish media in general and by RTE in particular to the publication of the Civil Partnership Bill."
The Report also draws attention to the battle to keep Christ "the Real 'X' Factor" at the heart of 'X'-mas and highlights an address by the Pope which calls on people to use Mary to overcome the hardness of heart which can be caused by repeated exposure to negative imagery in the media.
Other stories: Dracula meets Theology of the Body, 'Rogue verses weighed', No 'Baby Love' from 'The Supremes', The (David) Attenborough Effect (treating religion like rare species to be studied), Pornography -- the "quiet family killer" (new study)

Catholic investment company profits from pornography!

Christian Brothers Investment Services cornered in Rome

"Tim Samuels reveals that pornography is becoming more extreme, yet despite this, companies that are household names seem surprisingly pleased to make money from it. He finds out that extreme porn is making extreme profits for internet search engines and even pension funds.
On set in America, Tim speaks to porn actors who say they feel increasing pressure to undertake hardcore sex acts. He talks to the godfather of porn, Larry Flynt, and discovers that even he thinks porn is going too far.
However, there are more and more companies keen to cash in and collect porn's dirty dollars. A whistleblower tells him there is a Catholic investment fund that appears happy to profit from porn distributors, so he travels to Rome for a heated interview with the head of Christian Brothers Investment Services

Good cop, bad cop?

CNN's John Allen suggests Vatican newspaper article on Obama part of overall Church strategy

A recent front page article in the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano which dealt with the Obama administration's 'Life' record, in its first 100 days of power, has been sharply criticised by pro life groups in the U.S.
However, writing in the National Catholic Reporter and the Irish Catholic newspaper, CNN's Vatican watcher John Allen has suggested that the article may be part of a 'good cop, bad cop' strategy being employed by the Church.
The original article which appeared in the Italian daily edition of L'Osservatore Romano on April 29 has now been republished in the weekly English language edition (May 6).

Orwellian nightmare, U.S.A style

The freedom of Christians to speak openly, here, in the media, about God's plan for marriage and the family has already been compromised by the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland's (BCI) Code of Programme Standards (see Section 3.4.2 in particular).
Now, in the U.S., where freedom of speech has historically been better protected, a new 'hate' bill is being introduced which will, among other things, increase the protection for paedophiles to a level over and above that which is enjoyed by the general population!

'Honesty actually is the best policy' - scientifically speaking!

Trinity Psychology professor says that being dishonest damages you

"If honesty is one of your values then you damage yourself if you break it (that value)"... and you find it difficult to form relationships!
That was the verdict of Psychology Professor Ian Robertson of the Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience.
Prof Robertson went on to explain that the psychological requirement to live by values like honesty had developed over millions of years and was hard wired into us in such a way that we couldn't simply jettison it without harming ourselves.
The Trinity professor was taking part in a studio discussion in Newstalk Radio's Weekend Blend programme with Orla Barry, about a taxi driver who found a bag with $32,500 in cash in his taxi and returned it to its owners.

"Is the Pope right on condom use and Aids in Africa?"

Dr William Reville, enters debate on Aids condom effectiveness

"We now see HIV going down in about eight or nine African countries and in every case we see a decrease in the proportion of men and women who report having more than one sex partner in the past year. So, when the Pope said that the answer really lies in monogamy and marital faithfulness, that%u2019s exactly what we found empirically." And: "Instead of seeing this %u2013 condom availability and levels of condom use %u2013 associated with lower HIV infection rates, it is actually associated with higher HIV infection rates. New low in unbalanced news reporting!

RTE's role in EMBRYONIC stem cell destruction

In a series of news reports about Barack Obama's lifting of restrictions on the U.S. federal government funding of EMBRYONIC stem cell research, which requires the killing of human embryos, RTE appear to have utterly and inexplicably failed to present the story truthfully or even accurately! The reports inexplicably fail to make the distinction between, on the one hand, adult stem cell research -- which has a successful track record and does not involve the killing or otherwise harming of human embryos -- and on the other hand, embryonic stem cell research -- which has been utterly unsuccessful and does destroy human embryos, human life

"Falling at the Feet of Power"

RTE coverage of 2008 Lisbon debate unbalanced, says new report

Speaking at the launch of a new report highlighting significant bias by the state broadcaster in favour of a YES vote in last June's Lisbon Treaty referendum, Patricia McKenna MEP told Today FM that RTE was continuing to undermine the principles of the McKenna judgement.
In the McKenna judgement, the Supreme Court ruled 4-1 that "RTE was unconstitutional in relation to coverage of referenda," according to Ms McKenna.
In response to a question from a Today FM's reporter citing support for RTE by the Broadcasting Complaints Commission (BCC), Ms MKenna also drew attention to what she called "the public feeling of powerlessness up against RTE". The BCC, a Government appointed body has come under increasing attack recently for failing in its duty to protect children and ensure fair coverage of family related issues.
RTE are themselves bound by the Constitution, said Ms McKenna. "We have to ensure that RTE do not advocate any particular outcome"

Irish Times letter calls for "return to a more equitable tax regime consistent with our Constitution"

If economic growth called for tax individualisation shouldn't economic recession require its reversal?

"Music firms put faith in religion during recession"

Reuters reports Christian albums to dominate classical charts this Christmas

As part of this report, Reuters talks about three Northern Irish priests -- Eugene O'Hagan, Martin O'Hagan and David Delargy -- whose Gregorian Chant record, Reuters say, has sold about 700,000 copies since May. The priests, Reuters say, again, "have had to balance the demands of the media spotlight with their daily parish lives."...
"The Gregorian chant record has sold about 700,000 copies around the world since May and is being bought by people who would never ordinarily be interested in Gregorian chants," - Dickon Stainer, Universal Classics and Jazz managing director (emphasis added).

"Bacik critical of Catholic Church publication 'Alive'"

The Irish Times

In the Seanad, Senator Ivanna Bacik claims Alive "represented the equivalent of the paramilitary wing of the Catholic Church...It put forward very extreme views." ... (Both the comments by Senator Bacik -- a strong supporter of abortion rights -- and the choice of this headline by the Irish Times seem to be part of an ongoing campaign against Alive which itself appears to have been prompted by that newspaper's forthright defence of the traditional family and by its opposition to the Treaty of Lisbon)

From the Apple home page:
"No on Prop 8
Apple is publicly opposing Proposition 8 and making a donation of $100,000 to the No on 8 campaign. Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees' same-sex partners, and we strongly believe that a person's fundamental rights -- including the right to marry -- should not be affected by their sexual orientation. Apple views this as a civil rights issue, rather than just a political issue, and is therefore speaking out publicly against Proposition 8."
