Missing the big picture on abuse - RTE Drivetime -- Sat, 17 Dec 2011         THE DAY BEFORE YESTERDAY

In an item on Friday's Drivetime, dealing with a report on sexual abuse in the Dutch Catholic Church, RTE's Mary Wilson, RTE'S Philip Boucher-Hayes and a Dutch investigative reporter omitted an important fact: the Dutch Report, itself, pointed out that child sexual abuse was no more prevalent in the Catholic Church than it was in non-Catholic institutions ("It emerged that the risk was twice as high as the national average, but with no significant difference between Roman Catholic and
non-Roman Catholic institutions." - Page 9). The Programme also failed to read out a text which drew the attention of the Drivetime team to this statement in the Report, which begs the question, does the repeated omission of relevant facts and contextual information amount to deliberate public deception regarding the issue of child sexual abuse? - Drivetime [1 hr 17 mins into audio] - RTE Radio One - Fri 16th Dec, 2011

[Comment: The Programme also included the playing, without critical comment, of a particularly anti-Catholic section in the infamous Enda Kenny 'Cloyne' speech as well as a feature on Christopher Hitchens, who died on Thursday] ]

Amazing Grace! - Nationwide - RTE One -- Fri, 16 Dec 2011

Inishowen Peninsula!..."The hymn, Amazing Grace, played at many different occasions from weddings and funerals, it's a beautiful and powerful hymn. What is little known is the story of its connection to County Donegal. John Newton who penned the words of the Hymn 1773, had found refuge in Lough Swilly and wrote the famous words of the song as a result. Helen Mark reports from Buncrana on a major initiative to celebrate this unique link between Lough Swilly and this world famous hymn." - Hymn composer John Newton, William Wilberforce and 'spiritual tourism' in Donegal! -Amazing Grace! - Nationwide - RTE One - Wed 14th December, 2011

"I would like to make it clear that should the Government be informed by the Holy See that Pope Benedict wishes to visit Ireland at a time of mutual convenience, for instance, at the occasion of next year's EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS, I have no doubt that the Government would respond positively and that an invitation would be forthcoming." - Eamon Gilmore - Foreign Affairs Committee on the Closure of Embassies - Oireachtas Report - RTE 1 - Thu 15th Dec 2011

Ordination of women: Olivia O'Leary criticises George Weigel and the Church - Drivetime - RTE Radio 1 - Tue 13th Dec, 2011 [Comment: 'Gift and Mystery'... State sponsored 'errorism'... So much for ecumenism! ... Would such a rant against another religion be tolerated? ... Who paid for this? Answer: You! ...
